The roaring 20’s

The roaring 20’s

Why: I’m a retro gamer at heart, and when I started this project I thought it would be fun to pay tribute to all the great games that so many miss out on today. I also saw it as a chance to showcase all the awesome game heroines that I love, but people seem to forget. People always say that there aren’t any cool heroines in games, I beg to differ. Sure, there are far more male protagonists in games than females, but most of the male heroes are carbon copies of each other (the brown hair and stubble model…) with not much of an interesting personality. Female heroes tend to be much more interesting. This will be the first of many upcoming retro mash-up with cool female characters. They don’t necessarily need to be the lead protagonist of a game, but still a memorable character. How: Laura’s dress was the easiest, the only problem was that the number of roses on it differed on all the pictures. Sometimes she had two, sometimes it was only one. Emily and Sophia provided some challenge, I had never done a suit nor a jacket before, so there was a lot of freestyling involved. The Nur-Ab-Sal medallion was made out of foam coated with gesso. After that I experimented with different shades of brown, copper and gold to get the right color, and added some metallic color and patina that reacts with the metallic color. In hindsight I might have overdone the patina effect. I started on a Dagger of Amon Ra, but being short on time I didn’t manage to finish it. The drawings on the letters where made by Meiko Revolver, and as always, Sanchez was behind the writing. It’s all in the details: Laura’s nails has white feathers on them, as a homage to flappers The pictures on the letters are “lovecraftian” versions of the game companies logos: Sierra, Infogrames & LucasArts The letters contains the mad writings of Lord Boleskin from the Infogrames game Shadow of the Comet Emily’s Necronomicon is a homage to the Cthulhu referenses in Alone in the Dark, and to Shadow of the Comet and Prisoner of Ice Dagger of Amon Ra takes place 1926, Alone in the Dark in 1924 and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis in 1939. Sophia acquired the necklace during the Jastro Expedition in 1929, which would mean that our photoshoot would have to take place somewhere between 1930 to 1938, which in turn means it’s actually not the roaring 20’s. Lessons learned: When making patterns, you can use a TV as a substitute for a light table Metallic patina colors are really awesome Other: The dagger of Amon Ra and Prisoner of Ice are the only two games that have ever scared me Cookies: Heather’s homemade macaroons Drink: Sangria Music: The Archaeologist Song [Show as...

All Hallows Eve

All Hallows Eve

Halloween is coming up! Here most people don’t really care, I’m one of them. Even though I love making costumes and props, Halloween has never interested me. I made my first Halloween costume last year, Wonder Woman. I usually try my best to make and sew everything myself, buying as little as possible. But for Halloween I just don’t seem to care, I guess I see it more as a fun thing than something I want to be proud of.  My Wonder Woman costume consisted of a corsette and metallic hotpants I bought of ebay, only made the gold details and a cape myself. This year I’m going as Catwoman (seem to have a DC theme going on…), and just like the previous year, I’ve bought most of the costume of the internet. But I actually am sewing one Halloween costume, a Poison Ivy for my friend. Only problem is that I have to sew most of it the same evening as we’re going to use the costumes. We’ll see how well that goes… Here’s a WIP-photo for those of you who are interested, and yes, my home is always a total mess when I’m working with projects. I call it my creative chaos. Anyway, I’ll try and remember to take some group photos before we go...

The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

Blogging, I’ve never been good at it. I always get these thoughts and ideas that I want to write down, but whenever I sit down to write, the words seems to escape me. Or even worse, I just start blurting out these long rants that just ends up going in circles. With Incognito I wasn’t sure if I wanted to have any random blog texts at all, but after a while I realised that the page would be rather dead if I didn’t write anything now and then. Making costumes and props takes time, and organizing a shoot is hard, at minimum we have three different persons schedules that must match. So if I were to post only the photoshoots and behind the scenes, there would be maybe 3-6 entries a year. Not much really, so I’ve decided to start writing short entries now and then.  What they’ll be about we’ll see I guess. I’m also constantly encouraging the other Incognito people to write, but for now they have chosen to remain silent, much to my dismay. Anyway, today marked the release for Battlefield 3. There’s a store that specializes in having events during big releases, and for Battlefield they had a nighttime event with a cosplay competition. Not being a huge fan of those games (they’re fun, but not really my type of game), I missed it. Had I known I’d probably gone, because they had two categories in their cosplay competition, realistic uniforms and more “artsy/crazy” uniforms. Now I really hate being in competitions, but I would have loved to make a really sparkly My Little Pony-esque uniform, that would have been so awesome. So if they ever have an event for Battlefield 4, I’ll make that uniform.  It’s a promise. I actually attended their event for the release of the second game,  and I can’t help but wonder if it was me and my friend that sparked the idea to have that second category. Can you spot us in this...
